{"id":1247,"date":"2025-01-24T12:20:33","date_gmt":"2025-01-24T07:50:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/panjaradaily.com\/en\/?p=1247"},"modified":"2025-03-11T16:25:41","modified_gmt":"2025-03-11T11:55:41","slug":"unama-statement-on-the-international-day-of-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/panjaradaily.com\/en\/unama-statement-on-the-international-day-of-education\/","title":{"rendered":"UNAMA STATEMENT ON THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF EDUCATION"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>KABUL, Friday, January 24<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Today, on the International Day of Education, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) marks this significant occasion with a profound sense of regret and deep concern for the millions of Afghan girls who continue to be denied their fundamental right to education.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has been 1,225 days\u2014soon to be four years\u2014since the\u00a0<em>de facto<\/em>\u00a0authorities in Afghanistan imposed a ban that prevents girls above the age of 12 from attending school.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is a travesty and tragedy that millions of Afghan girls have been stripped of their right to education. No country has ever thrived by disempowering and leaving behind half its population. The\u00a0<em>de facto<\/em>\u00a0authorities must end this ban immediately and allow all Afghan girls to return to school,\u201d said Roza Otunbayeva, the Secretary-General\u2019s Special Representative for Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since August 2021, the\u00a0<em>de facto<\/em>\u00a0authorities have instituted sweeping restrictions on the most basic rights and freedoms of women and girls. Afghanistan is the only country in the world that explicitly bars women and girls from all levels of education.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The International Day of Education, celebrated annually on January 24, underscores education\u2019s critical role in achieving peace, development, and equality.
